New BJOG Supplement
International Reviews: MDGs 4 & 5 in South Asia

This month sees the launch of the supplement to BJOG, International Reviews: MDGs 4 & 5 in South Asia. Guest-edited by Devender Roberts and Nynke van den Broek, the supplement includes 17 papers consisting of reviews, country case studies and commentaries which focus on five countries in South Asia and the current progress towards achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5; namely reducing the under-5 mortality rate by two thirds between 1990-2015 (MDG4), reducing maternal mortality ratio by three quarters between 1990 and 2015 (MDG5.A.) and achieving universal access to reproductive health by 2015 (MDG5.B.).

Highlights include:

  • A review and country case study for five countries in South Asia, namely India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
  • Challenges and opportunities that each country faces and estimations of the likelihood that the 2015 targets will be met.
  • Commentaries from experts in the field which cover the importance of quality of care in maternal and newborn health, and the roles of organisations such as WHO and SAFOG.
  • Discussions of current strategies and interventions for newborn care and family planning including the DFID- UK AID Safe Motherhood Programme in Nepal and the ‘Making it Happen’ programme in Bangladesh and India.

This supplement was launched in Athens this year at the RCOG 9th International Meeting. If you were not able to pick up a copy at the conference, the supplement is available to download for free via the BJOG website, www.bjog.org, and some print copies are available from the Editorial office on a first come first served basis.
